Combining the finesse of Mercedes-Benz with the build quality of Auto-Sleeper, this 2014 Wave is an exceptional two berth campervan, with much to offer. Externally, the Wave stands out with a cherry red paint scheme, combining well with coordinating graphics. The Vito has an appealing exterior, with pleasing lines and colour-coded front skirts. Its aerodynamic shape hints at good on-road performance, while the three-pronged Mercedes star on the front grille suggests pleasurable driving, while simultaneously sating the badge-conscious. This particular example has been equipped with the Premium Pack, which features smart alloy wheels, chrome running rails and tinted rear windows. The Wave is fitted with a Reimo pop-top to give a standing height of up to 2.27m (7ft 5in). Zipped panels in the front and sides open to provide ventilation. Habitation doors can be found on either-side, whilst a door opens at the rear too. All are integrated into the central locking system. The nearside of the motorhome houses the electric hook-up socket, along with the point for the refillable gas tank, which is located in a locker on the right as you open the rear door. Moving over to the offside of the Wave, you will find the water inlet point, Truma gas vent and a socket to house a television aerial outside, should you wish to. A tow-bar is fitted to the rear, whilst other external options include front and rear parking sensors.
The design and finish of the living quarters is that of expected from an Auto-Sleeper, excellent. Light finished cabinetry pairs brilliantly with oatmeal upholstery, combined with dark-brown leather leading edges and beige drop-in carpets. Taking a look at the front cab area you will find twin seats, offering high levels of comfort on journeys. Each has the ability to swivel round and add to the arrangement behind, as well as becoming a vital part of the bed setup. The cabin’s ergonomic layout has the essentials close to hand. Retractable cup holders are located in the dashboard and there’s a central storage pocket between the driver and passenger. Cab specification is very good too, you have: ABS, power steering, optional fitted cruise control, multi-function steering wheel, electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning, heated seats, heated rear window, parking sensor indicators for central, nearside and offside and a radio system with phone connectivity. The Wave is based on the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz Vito Dualiner MPV, with a 116CDI engine, further enhanced with a five-speed automatic gearbox as part of the Premium Pack. Average fuel economy is very good too. This example has covered just over 45,000 miles from new.
The Wave has a pair of sliding doors, and eschews the usual offside kitchen campervan floor plan, so the living area can be accessed from both sides of the van. The lounge can seat four; two in the rotated cab seats and two in the rear travel seats. Operated via a catch on the inward side of the seat plinths, the front seats both have a table mount for mealtimes. To add a table, unclip its supports from the rear bulkhead and unclip the tabletops from the tailgate. These attach to the mounts, can be moved into position easily and secured using screw tighteners. The well-sprung rear seats are high quality. Lumbar support comes courtesy of wraparound cushions that attach via Velcro and can be moved up and down the backrest. Natural light enters through the side windows and the elevating roof, with its removable sides and front lowered. Small LED strip lights above the doors provide illumination at night. Beneath the offside seat is the optional fitted Webasto diesel-powered heating unit, which allows you to control the ambient temperature precisely. The control dial is located on the wardrobe wall, along with the main panel and the gas level indicator.
When it comes to sleeping in the Wave, twin single beds can be configured. Each makes up by rotating the front seats so the backrests are out of the way, then sliding the rear seat bases forward by releasing a catch on the inside of each seat base. The bases slide on rails and the backrests fold flat to fill the space they vacate. When converted, each berth offers good back support and assures a good night's sleep.
With the central gangway created by the travelling seats, the Wave's kitchen is split across the campervan. On the nearside you will find a stainless steel sink with a fold down chrome mixer tap, complete with a smoked glass lid. Below you will find a grill unit, which has a wooden cover to neatly match with the surrounding cabinetry. Opposite on the offside is a two-burner gas hob, again with a smoked glass lid. Below in a large drawer you will find an Isotherm portable cooling box. There’s a good amount of work surface, especially with both lids lowered. Each side of the kitchen gets a small strip light, supported with mood lighting that shines into the elevating roof. Three plug sockets are fitted in the galley. As part of the Premium Pack you also get Truma water heating, which is useful for when washing up.
